Powered-off VMs

There's another view in the Views Gallery that's worth checking out. The Powered-Off Virtual Machines view shows us VMs that have been powered off and what percentage of time they've been powered off. We might have several of these in our environment because they were used for testing or they've been replaced by newer servers, or perhaps a developer asked for it and used it for a few months and now they've moved on to something else.

Again, we see the Virtual Machine, Policy and vCenter Server columns by which it's managed. We then see the Total Virtual Disk Space Configured and the Provisioned Disk Space columns. Remember that VMs that are powered off do not take CPU, memory, or network resources. However, they do still take up space. As we can see from the % Time Powered-Off column, we have several VMs that have been powered off for 99 percent or 100 percent of the time since they were created. If we were to get rid of those VMs and reclaim that space, we could get several hundred gigabytes of storage back for new VMs. Therefore, we don't need to purchase more disks, shelves for the storage array, or even entire arrays, depending on how large our environment is. We should also take note that we can assign different policies to different objects and we can sort by policy as shown in the previous table. This would be useful if we have a lot of templates. It would be worth creating a new policy for them so we can avoid getting a false positive on the tables such as Powered-Off Virtual Machines.
